Overwatch competition between USC Aiken and Lander University

USCA’s Overwatch team “faced off” against Lander University’s team Sunday, Sept. 19.

Overwatch is a “team-based multiplayer first-person shooter game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment.” Teams of six are delegated and “heroes” are chosen. Tasks are assigned and constrained to a time limit; the team to complete the objectives first wins.

Through the two hard-fought games, USCA was unable to take the win.

The teams initially battled at Nepal, a control map.  With the first match being played on the Sanctum section of the map, USCA was not able to take control of the point before Lander.

In the second round, they played on the Village section of the map. USCA was able to force overtime but was ultimately unsuccessful in their attempt to achieve a third round.

After losing game one, USCA and Lander moved onto King’s Row, a hybrid map.  Leading off with USCA on the attack, the team fought their way through the first major chokepoint, captured it and scored a point.

The team was then able to move the payload from the initial capture point throughout the map, coming less than three meters short of capturing the final objective before time ran out.

Lander was able to surpass the point at which USCA reached, winning the match.

Historically, USCA’s ESports team has been nationally successful. Future ESports games are expected to take place this semester, with hopeful students looking to claim another win.
