Natural Hair Tips: Wash and Go 101

Mastering a “wash and go” can be tricky. It’s more than “washing your hair and going.” After so many failed attempts, you’ll think that a wash-and-go is not for you. The tips below will show you how to master a wash-and-go and develop the confidence to wear your natural curls no matter how kinky and coily.

Mastering a wash-and-go starts with the shampoo process. You must thoroughly cleanse your scalp and hair of dandruff and dirt. A mistake that people make when shampooing is that they only focus on the scalp. The hair shaft is just as important as the scalp so when shampooing, run the water and shampoo throughout your hair. After you are done cleansing your hair, follow up with a conditioner or deep conditioner. Personally, I skip the rinse conditioner and go straight to the deep conditioner and use it to detangle my hair.

Once you detangle your hair with the deep conditioner leave it in for 30 minutes with a plastic cover cap. Once the 30 minutes are up thoroughly rinse your hair and apply your leave-in conditioner. The leave-in conditioner serves as a moisturizer base for your wash-and-go. Leave the leave-in conditioner with a plastic cap for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, section your hair into four sections.
Sectioning your hair will help you to evenly distribute the styling cream to your hair. The more sections the better! The best product for a great wash-and-go is a cream for the curl definition and gel to hold the curl in place. You won’t need a lot of product because a little goes a long way and make sure to have your spray bottle of warm water on standby when you need to drench your hair. Styling a wash-and-go requires a lot of water so expect your shoulders to be wet.

Take a small section of your hair and apply your curling cream by raking it through your strands. Follow it up with a small amount of gel to that same section and continue throughout your hair. Once you are done, let your hair air dry for several hours until the strands are dry. After you’re done airdrying you need to dry the roots. Take a diffuser attachment and dry the
roots of your hair in sections. Afterward, section your hair in four sections and use the blow dryer (without diffuser attachment) and “stretch” your hair. Take a small section from your four sections and use your free hand to stretch your hair from the ends. Use the blow dryer and glide it along the strands of your hair and continue until your hair is completely stretched.
