The University of South Carolina’s women’s basketball team has achieved the champion spot in the 2022 NCAA National Championship. The team defeated University of Connecticut in the finals, with a point total of 64-49. This is the second time the team has achieved victory in the last five years. Senior Destanni Henderson achieved a career high of 26 points in the final game against University of Connecticut.

“Today, we’re national champions and I’m in tears,” said Aliyah Boston, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. Boston was also named Naismith Player of the Year.

The Gamecocks had experienced success in the past, holding the number one spot in 2020, but it was short-lived due to the initial COVID-19 outbreak that led to the cancellation of the tournament. They finished out the season with a record of 35-2, besting their previous record of 34 set in the 2014-2015 season. The team has won 10 championships in the last century. This achievement also puts head coach Dawn Staley as the first Black men’s and women’s coach with two Division I titles. Staley has also been named Coach of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
