University cancels Thursday classes, activities based on forecast

Classes and activities scheduled for Thursday, October 11 have been cancelled, according to an official university email.

The email specified that while the USC Aiken Children’s Center will be closed, university offices will remain open and all essential personnel will “report as scheduled.”

“All classes and activities are expected to resume and be conducted as planned Friday, Oct. 12,” the email continued. “Any updates will be posted on the USC Aiken website.”

Hurricane Michael made landfall today in New Mexico Beach, Florida. According to Post and Courier, the storm is now “just 2 mph shy of the Category 5 strength of the deadliest storms.”

Michael has been rated by experts as the most powerful hurricane to hit the continental U.S. since the 1992 storm Andrew.

USC Aiken officials reminded students that if conditions affect a student’s ability to travel safely, they should “coordinate missed work with professors.”

Students should also consider downloading the ALERTUS app, which will send university updates directly to cell phones, though the University will continue posting updates to the USC Aiken homepage.
