"Sex Education" balances the raunchy and authentic in award-winning seasons

The newest season of “Sex Education” has just been released on Netflix, giving viewers more to look forward to come season four.

“Sex Education” is a Netflix original show that first aired in 2019 by Laurie Nunn. The show has had great success, especially with its first season achieving several BAFTA TV nominations and wins as well as the “British LGBT: Metro Media Moment” award.

The series centers its plot around Otis Milburn — a socially awkward 16-year-old. His mother, ironically, has frequent affairs with various men and is a sex therapist. Otis uses his cursed knowledge to his advantage when he and his fellow classmate, Maeve Wiley, start up a sex advice clinic for students that have problems or questions related to sex.

While on the surface it appears to be a raunchy comedy, “Sex Education” can give much-needed insight into today’s youth. While many shows will write in LGBTQIA+ characters for diversity points and laughs, “Sex Education” does not shy away from showing how teenagers today really interact with each other and incorporates individuals from all over the sexuality spectrum in a natural and believable way.

The show also deals with heavy subjects such as homophobia, sexual trauma and abuse, and psychological issues such as depression and anxiety. The show represents these themes in a respectful yet uncoated and raw manner.

“Sex Education” is a must-watch for those looking for a show with progressive writing and diverse inclusion that is authentic, or those just looking for a show to get hooked on.
