Are the dorms safe to live in?

Why aren’t the dorms safe?

I have lived on campus for four years and I can say that the safest building is Pacer Crossings. However, it seems that because older students live in other housing on campus, those buildings shouldn’t be just as safe as the freshman dorm.

Besides the extreme amount of mold in the buildings, especially Pacer Downs, there are many safety issues in the biggest building, Pacer Commons.

For starters, all the doors where students must scan IDs to enter automatically remain open for a few minutes. This can lead to strangers walking in behind students and causing problems. This happened last semester, Fall 2022, where four men were breaking into buildings and filming students.

The next safety issue Commons has is that the elevators haven’t been inspected since May 2018. I know I’m not the only student that gets freaked out when going into them. I feel like I’m going to get stuck.

Lastly, the communication between maintenance and the students. When there is a routine check, like changing the air filters, the students don’t get notified. I was asleep that day and all a sudden, I heard someone in my dorm, and I got scared that they broke in. Wasn’t until I went out into my living room to see who it was that I knew it was them.

This school takes pride in the safety of its students. Then why aren’t we safe in our living conditions?
