This week in baseball and softball: UNC Pembrooke, Tusculum and Francis Marion

The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered five runs over the final three innings for a 5-3 win at UNC Pembroke Sunday afternoon. The Pacers are now 1-1 on the season. Trailing 3-0, Michael Holder's team got things going in the seventh inning. After Sean McQuillan reached on an error, Jeff Cyr ripped a 3-2 pitch to left field, allowing McQuillan to race to third base. Kaden Blankenship belted a single through the left side of the infield, plating McQuillan for a 3-1 score.

The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a pair of games against Tusculum Saturday. USC Aiken lost the first game 7-2 before notching a 6-5 win in the nightcap. The Pacers are now 1-1 on the season as are the Pioneers. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first of game one, Brianna Dow reached on a one-out walk. She was quickly brought home when Mallory Shaver blasted a double to the gap in left center field in her first career at bat.

The softball team also split a pair of games at Francis Marion Sunday, winning 2-1 before falling 7-6 in eight innings. The Pacers are now 2-2 on the season as are the Patriots. Head coach Jaclin Poole's team jumped on top with a two-run third inning of game one. Holly Daum led off the stanza with a walk and scampered to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Jessica Stanley. Daum scored when Jena Dewalt reached on a fielding error. Dewalt hustled to third after moving to second on a throwing error and a grounder from Mallory Shaver. A double from Emily Ayers pushed Dewalt across home plate for a 2-0 edge.
