Column: Go Greek, get involved, gain long-lasting friendships at USC Aiken

I was never the type of person who thought they would get involved with Greek life. I always said I would never join a sorority.

Thankfully, my mind was changed by two of my co-workers.

I’m involved in many different organizations on USC Aiken’s campus, and while I genuinely love the work I do within those organizations, being in my sorority is fulfilling in a different type of way.

Not only do I get to do philanthropy work, which is a major aspect of what we do and allows us to make a difference in the community, there are also the social connections associated with Greek life.

Being in Greek life allows you to get involved in other events on campus that you might not normally get involved with. For instance, at Homecoming this year, many of the sororities and fraternities formed their own teams for the events. As an introvert, this isn’t necessarily something I would do on my own but my sorority allowed me to branch out and participate in events I wouldn’t want to do alone.

Greek life also allows you to be fully immersed in campus life and participate in fun events. It will also bring you better friends than you could ever imagine for yourself. They will be there for you for fun times, but they will also be there in hard times.

Joining Greek life means you’ll never have to experience hardships alone. When my cat got out of the house at almost midnight a few weeks ago, I cried to my sorority sisters and many of them offered to come over and help me look for her. There is a different kind of friendship and loyalty that happens when you join a Greek organization.

It’s a ride-or-die kind of friendship, and I truly cannot imagine my life without my sisters.

Formal recruitment for Greek life at USCA will take place towards the beginning of the fall semester, but you can also attend COB events for different Greek organizations on campus and get a bid that way. Be sure to keep an eye out for these events that will be happening throughout the rest of this semester.
