First Full Listen+ Album Review: Take Care
Originally, I was going to write about Drake’s Last Album “Her Loss” which was a collab with 21 Savage, but unfortunately, I didn’t like it too much. Hearing it made me think of a simpler time, aka back in 2011 when he released Take Care.
Apple Music lists the most popular songs on the album as “Headlines”, “Crew Love” ft. The Weeknd, “Take Care” ft. Rihanna, “Marvins Room”, “HYFR” ft. Lil Wayne and “The Motto” ft. Lil Wayne.
Like many other albums, this one is meant to be listened to in a certain order. There are stories told from 1-20. The album opens up with “Over My Dead Body”.
Also on the album titled Take Care is a song called “Take Care”. This song is rumored to be a continuation of a previous Rihanna song that Drake featured in, “What’s My Name”. Coming at number five
Next on the album is “Marvins Room”. This has been one of the tracks on the album to survive time. Most likely in the course of one night, Drake is drunk and lonely and wants to see one of his old flings, zoning in on one that’s currently in a relationship but still entertaining him. This has become the go-to song for missing your ex.
Fun fact! He recorded this song in one of the singers, Marvin Gaye’s studios!
One of my personal favorites is “Look What You’ve Done”. Drake thanks his family members who supported his career from acting to making the jump to becoming a rapper. At the end of the song, he includes a voicemail from his grandmother who’s reminiscing on their memories together and expressing her love for him.
The last song on the original version of the album is “The Ride”. In six minutes he gives a start-to-finish on his journey with fame. With The Weeknd on the chorus, Drake recalls three different times in his career that changed his current view on being famous.
In November of the same year, he went on to release Take Care (Deluxe Version) which included “The Motto” ft. Lil Wayne and “Hate Sleeping Alone”
This album easily goes on my top ten of all time and is the number one Drake album in my opinion. The reasons are:
The features listed on the album were great for their time
This album was such a cultural reset. You can listen to any song off of this album and get immediate nostalgia and still remember the verses years later
Every single one of the tracks aged well
This was the only Drake album that I had never fully listened to. After hearing all 20 songs (including the bonus tracks) I’m able to say that this is my favorite album of his.
