Should We Have ICE Credits?

Should We Have ICE Credits?

Recently USC Aiken hosted the Student Summit, an event held every four to five years to gauge the campus and what is needed to improve. Something almost everyone talked about were ICE Events, whether they love or hate them.

In my opinion, ICE Events can be helpful to get you out there, but I feel that they should not be mandatory on campus in order to graduate. They also shared some reasons why.

  • Being a parent and only having a little time between classes, not enough for an ICE Event, however.

  • Being a full-time student and a full-time worker and not being able to make it to events frequently.

  • They don’t ever see ones that interest them

  • They never have fun going to them

This all has created a running idea that has been noticed on campus, should we have ICE Events?

USC Aiken is the only school in the USC system that still requires ICE Events. Every other school has done away with them but we are keeping up with them and for what reason?

With the numerous voices that placated the Student Summit about not enjoying ICE Events, we have to hope that the school listens to us and begins work on doing away with events. It would ease some students' worries as they get close to graduation without having the necessary credits.

Another standpoint on it that I have also heard on it is that forcing these events does not properly gauge students' interest on events which can skew certain organizations' findings.

ICE Events tend to have higher attendance as students need to get them done to graduate. If they were done away with, people would go to events that they actually enjoy. This would help show organizations that others are going to their events because it is what they enjoy. It could make those popular events a regular experience for everyone to enjoy without that force behind it making people go!

This could help the whole student population learn about where to go and make events catered directly to the students.

Generally, a lot of students agree that ICE Events should not be required anymore, so here’s to hoping they start a process to do away with them to meet the wants of the students.
