Very Superstitious

Since it’s Halloween, it’s the perfect time to educate the public on popular superstitions among the black community. My entire life I heard about things that you shouldn’t do or should take as signs of good luck, etc. but upon talking to people around me, they’re universal Black beliefs and I personally believe all of them.

  • Don’t put your purse on the floor! This could lead to bad financial experiences. Not sure if this is rooted in it actually causing bad luck or if having your purse away from you makes it easier for people to seal from you…but either or.

  • If you have a dream about fish then someone around you is already or is to going to get pregnant. This is a big one because it seems always to be the case.

  • If someone sweeps over your foot, you have to spit on the broom. I’m not sure what will happen if you don’t get to spit on the same broom that someone swept over your foot with, or if it only counts if it’s on one of your feet or if it goes for other body parts too. But what I do know is that you need to spit on that broom.

  • Broken mirrors! If you break a mirror, you’ll have seven years of bad luck. If the mirror breaks on its own, someone close to you will die. This was originally introduced by ancient Romans.

  • When you’re finished doing your hair, if there’s any shedding then you need to flush it down the toilet or burn it. I’ve heard the consequences in two different forms. 1. A bird will recognize your hair and make a nest out of it. Or 2. Someone could use your hair to cast a spell against you

Let me know if you have any of your own personal superstitions!
