Poems with Anab: Changing with the weather

As we transition from Spring to Summer, we arrive near the end of this semester.

Seasons aren’t the only things that are changing. This time of year, some tend to evaluate themselves more than on New Year’s Eve.

In the spirit of change, I have chosen to share some poems that reflect on those feelings as well as exploring the theme of Spring.

“Summer rushes in
on the heels of spring,
eager to take her turn.
And then she dances with wild abandon.
But the time soon comes
when she gratefully falls,
exhausted and sated,
in the auburn arms
of autumn.”
— Cristen Rodgers

“April rides in on the tail of March’s winds
whistling through the trees,
filled with newborn greens.
Harmony has returned to the fields as
chipmunks play chase among the narcissus
and tulips that dot the lawn,
in colors of pink, yellow, lavender and white;
a red cardinal sits upon the bird bath watching

while a grey squirrel, hunting for his stash,
chases away a snickering mockingbird.
I notice the purple irises are just beginning
to unfold their delicate blossoms, atop the greenery.
April rains will soon leave vacated stems,
but for now, I will bask in the suns bounteous rays
and enjoy the chromatic flora,

for I’ve waited months for this joyous moment.”

“I got my house in order, and
felt so high and mighty
sun, moon, and stars observed
I knew the rain could soothe my soul
thunder clasped; lightening flashed
my house and I shook with the howling wind
we were no where near completion.”

“There’s been an undeniable truth
Since before we even existed;
Nothing ever stays the same.
Change cannot be resister.”
— Ms Moem

“Change
Said the sun to the moon,
You cannot stay.

Change
Says the moon to the waters,
All is flowing.

Change
Says the fields to the grass,
Seed-time and harvest,
Chaff and grain.

You must not change said,
Said the worm to the bud,
Though not to a rose,

Petals fade
That wings may rise
Borne to the wind.

You are changing
said death to the maiden, your wan face
To memory, to beauty.

Are you ready to change?
Says the thought to the heart, to let her pass
All your life long

For the unknown, the unborn
In the alchemy
Of the world’s dream?

You will change,
says the stars to the sun,
Says the night to the stars.”
— Change
Kathleen Raine

In the great words of Martin Luther King Jr.: “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.“

Good luck with finals week, everyone. We’re almost there.
