The voices of USC Aiken's communication program: Interviews with Communication students

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in communication at USC Aiken must examine communication processes in interpersonal relationships through small and large groups spanning different cultures and forms of media. Communications students who are in the process of gaining these skills are people like:

Grace Fulton, a senior majoring in comm because she would get to take a varsity of courses outside of her comfort zone. One of Fulton’s favorite classes was “Research Methods class with Dr. Triana.” Fulton enjoyed the class because she had the opportunity to research true crime media. “I would recommend the qualitative version of this class to anyone looking for experience interviewing and understanding communication research.”

Fulton mentioned that Visual Communication was one the most difficult for her, because “I am not an artistically gifted person at all, so this course took a big effort!”

Anna Grace Langley, a junior said “Growing up, my sister was always terrified to speak to people so I would always speak up for the both of us. Through that I fell in love with communicating with people from every walk of life” and that is why she became a comm major.

One of Langley’s favorite courses is COMM 201 with Dr. Webb. She said, “She made it super interesting as she would often refer to our communication toolbox and how we can use our newly learned skills.”

However, Langley said “for my least favorite class, it would be probably be Visual comm. I simply am not a huge fan of the course because I am really bad with technology, however my professor, Dr. Morris, makes the class much better because he is beyond patient and goes the extra mile to work with students like me who aren’t the most tech savvy.”

Samuel Taylor Herndon is also a junior majoring in comm.

Herndon was originally a Psychology major, but after taking Dr. Munsell’s, Introduction to Communication course it inspired him to change his major. Research Methods in Communication with Dr. Triana is Herndon’s favorite class because “this class showed me more information on the research side of communication.”

Amaya Noelle Emmons, a sophomore majoring in comm shared her reason as to why she chose to major in comm: “Many of the majorly influential people in my life have all been communication majors and as i grew up they taught me the importance of communication in both everyday life and future work environments.” that is when Emmons fell in love with learning how to best communicate and work to better use those skills.

She continued, “Dr. Morris’ Digital Communications class were probably the most helpful towards my future career path so I appreciate it the most.” Emmons enjoyed the class because she liked the challenge.

Emmons also said “ I recommend any of the Comm classes to every student. Communication is a detrimental skill. You can be the best in a specific field, but if you can’t communicate your thoughts or ideas to your teammates your skills are useless.”

For Emmons, “So far none of my Communications courses have been unenjoyable.” she continued “I have had some challenging General Education courses, simply because the course work is so much and takes my time and energy away from all my other course work.”
